Prayer is our main work, and must always take first place. But like everyone else we have to earn our living, and manual work has always been an important part of monastic life.
We run a small business selling altar breads to parishes and schools, and we also sell hand made cards and icons.
Through work we share in the creative action of God, learn the discipline of serving others, and express ourselves as physical beings in a created world. Just as Jesus son of Joseph the carpenter worked for his living in solidarity with his brothers and sisters, so do we as his disciples.
‘Another very good proof of love is that you strive in household duties to relieve others of work, and also rejoice and praise the Lord very much for any increase you see in their virtues’.
(St Teresa, Way of Perfection 7.9)
